The Hemet Police Department’s Records Bureau provides service to the community at the Records front counter and by telephone. In addition to assisting the public, Police Records Technicians are responsible for the storage, maintenance and retrieval of all written and computerized records, crime/arrest reports, traffic accidents, stored vehicles and citations.
The Records Bureau is staffed by six full-time employees and is supplemented by several specially trained police volunteers.
Public counter services include:
- Inspecting and signing off vehicle correction citations
- Releasing stored vehicles to registered owners
- Releasing copies of reports to authorized persons
- Clearance Letters
State law restricts the release of police reports, and the Hemet Police Department follows these mandates to the letter. Despite common belief, most reports are NOT legally available to the general public, however; some are available to specific people.
Copies of police reports may be released to authorized parties of interest including:
- A victim or authorized representative of the victim of a crime
- Party or registered owner of a vehicle involved in a traffic collision
- The insurance carrier against whom a claim has been or may be made
- Person who suffered bodily injury or property damage in a traffic collision
- Attorneys with a representation letter along with their clients signed authorization
Authorized parties can request their report via the Hemet Police Department’s smartphone app, available for free in Apple App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android users.
All reports requested via the app are mailed to the requestor at the address provided in the request. Some crimes against persons reports must be picked up in person with the appropriate ID at the Records counter.
Traffic Accident Reports can also be obtained online at ecrash.lexisnexis.com.
A valid government ID w/photo is required for any report release and some services. The Records Bureau is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed for holidays. You are encouraged to call the department at (951) 765-2410, before visiting, to determine what documents are needed to obtain a particular service, and/or to confirm if a report is available for release.
